Hiking Backpack

All hiking backpacks are not the same; they are designed for different uses. It is important to give some thought as to how, and where, you are going to use your new hiking backpack. After all, you will have to carry it up and down hills, jumping streams, scrambling over rocks, and still have enough energy to enjoy your hike!

Tips to keep in mind -

  • Weight - Your full pack should not weigh more than about 25% to 30% of your body weight.
  • Hip / waist belt – The purpose of a waist belt is to transfer the weight to your hips and legs. A good belt is wide and not too soft. It must have a large strong buckle, usually plastic, and be easy to adjust for various sizes.
  • Shoulder straps – They do take some load but their main job is to keep the backpack in place. They should be well padded, and be able to keep your backpack close to your body without slipping and chafing.
  • Stabilizing straps – Small chest straps help keep the shoulder straps from slipping and various small straps help to further stabilize the backpack.
  • Back pads – One of the problems with internal frames is that the backpack is very close to your back and that can make you sweat. Padded back panels help with air flow and better support.
