Hiking Tents Features

Hiking has become a favourite pastime for people of all ages. Whether alone, or with friends, backpacking can be a fun and adventurous way to spend a weekend. It gives you a chance to escape the madness of the city, explore natural surroundings and get some great exercise to boot.

If nature and the great outdoors appeals to you and you enjoy hiking long distances with overnight stays, then it is time to start looking at hiking tents, as they are an important piece of your hiking gear. Adventure hiking and backpacking off the grid and in the wilderness will require hiking tents which provide a comfortable balance between weight and packing capacity. Make sure to prepare yourself for the worst possible type of weather you’ll encounter.

The type of backpacking tent that you choose will depend largely on how you plan to use it. If you are going on a solo summer hiking trip, a small and basic tent may be right for you. A small tent doesn’t allow much room for moving around or storing supplies, but it is easier to carry and set up.

Hiking tents are rated by the number of people they can accommodate.  When they say it’s a 2-person tent, they mean 2 people and nothing else, so it is usually better to get a tent that can accommodates one extra. Consider the length and width of the hiking tents you’re looking at. If you’re 6 feet tall you’ll want at least 7 feet to stretch out length-wise and 2-3 feet of width depending on how much you move in your sleep. The best hiking tents would always be the ones where you can sit up erect without your head touching the top of the tent. For two man tents, consider the location of the door before your proceed with your purchase.

Furthermore, when the time comes to assemble your tent, you want it to go up quickly and easily, especially at the end of a long, tiring day of hiking. Worse yet, if it is raining or snowing, you really want your tent to go right up so you can get inside, stay dry and get warm.

Condensation is an age old problem of tents. Double-wall tents with a waterproof outer fly and a breathable inner tent give better protection against condensation. Single walled tents use vents, mesh and waterproof, but breathable fabrics, to achieve the same.

The color of the tent will determine the light color, and brightness inside the tent. Orange, gray, green, and blue gives a dimmer light, while yellow, white and cream are brighter. For snowy conditions bright colors like yellow and orange will make sure that your tent stands out in the snow.

Keep your tent as dry as possible. If it gets wet, spread it out in the sun to dry the first chance you get. If it’s still wet when you get home, hang it up to dry completely before you pack it away. Putting a tent away wet is a sure recipe for mold.

Hiking is an adventure! However, choosing the right tent will make all the difference for you, so make sure to consider climate, ventilation, price, staying dry, and tent design when tent shopping. When you’re snuggled up warm and dry in your tent, you’ll be so glad you did!

Colorado’s Gateway Canyons: Elevating Romance

Sent to you by Renee via Google Reader:

Somewhere between the thrill of the scenic flight in the sleek Cessna Caravan plane, the chocolate covered strawberries, the Colorado wine, custom massage and plush accommodations– those endorphins, the ultimate feel-good hormones, are going to kick in. Valentine’s holiday guests of Gateway Canyons Resort, located just one hour southwest of Grand Junction, Colorado, may choose from three extraordinary weekend packages lined up for the Valentine holiday: Love Is In The Air, Gateway To Romance, and the whimsical Arts, Hearts & Tarts package. All are guaranteed to inspire romance and ignite passion.

For the Love Is In The Air package at Gateway Canyons, a unique and memorable getaway is highlighted by an exhilarating scenic air tour in a Cessna Caravan with Gateway Canyons Air Tours. After a delightful jaunt among the clouds, couples can enjoy all the resort’s other treats: lavish accommodations, a custom massage for two from The Spa at Gateway Canyons, a bottle of Colorado wine, chocolate covered strawberries, fine dining for two at the Paradox Grille, and even a horse-drawn carriage ride. A luxurious destination set in one of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in all of Colorado, Gateway Canyons is located midway on the Unaweep-Tabequache Scenic and Historic Byway. The spectacular Colorado canyon country which encouraged the designation of this route as a scenic byway is even more impressive from the air. The package price for all these amenities and activities, for the February 11 and 12 weekend, starts at $376 per person based on double occupancy.

For sweethearts seeking a more serene experience, Gateway Canyons offers the memorable and inspired Gateway To Romance package. It offers cozy accommodations, a horse-drawn carriage ride, and romantic fine dining at the Paradox Grille. Upon arrival couples will be greeted with a bottle of Colorado wine and chocolate covered strawberries. The Gateway To Romance package, which excludes the spa treatments and air tour, is modestly priced with rates starting at $184 per person based on double occupancy on February 11 and 12.

The Arts, Hearts & Tarts package is offered every Friday and Saturday in February and includes one night’s accommodation, a gourmet dinner for two, a viewing in the resort’s new high definition theater of ‘The Colorado National Monument– Celebrating 100 Years of John Otto’s Dream’, or ‘Hanging Flume’, and a treasure hunt for art in Gateway including fiber arts, paintings, ironworks and stained glass. The Arts, Hearts & Tarts package starts at $124 per person based on double occupancy.

For guests eager to get to Gateway Canyons this winter but unable to make it for a February weekend, the Winter Oasis package is an option that will be available until April 4, 2011. This relaxing retreat combines winter and oasis– two seemingly incongruous ideas– which come together beautifully with superbly appointed accommodations, a massage in the elegant new spa, and upscale contemporary American cuisine at the Paradox Grille. A bottle of regional Colorado wine completes the package. The Winter Oasis package is available with either a one or two-night stay, and package prices start at $199 per person for one night, and $249 per person for a two-night stay.

Through March 6, 2011, Gateway Canyons will be serving winter lodging, dining and spa guests each week on Wednesday afternoons through mid-afternoon on Sundays. Package prices for the Valentine and winter getaways are quoted at double occupancy. Taxes and alcoholic beverages at dinner are additional to quoted prices. The Ultimate Appalachian Trail Map

via Hiking Lady by Hiking Lady on 8/6/10

As I read about the adventures of others, I constantly remind myself of the motto of Hiking Lady: “Let the Adventuring Begin”! I recently came across an excellent Appalachian Trail Map published by the National Park Service, and it made me realize how many amazing places there are along the AT!

Click here for a JPG of the Appalachian Trail Map
The Appalachian Trail (fondly known as the A.T.), is a popular journey for thru-hikers, section hikers, and recreational day trippers. (If you don’t know what thru-hikers and section hikers are, check out this Ask Hiking Lady page on thru-hiking). The idea of the Appalachian Trail was thought up in 1921, and by 1937 private citizens built the 2,175 mile long trail! Impressive!
This Appalachian Trail map captures some of its massiveness – it extends all the way from Georgia to Maine, passes through 14 states, and numerous ecological zones.
Other fun facts about the A.T.:

  • It is a total of 2,175 miles long. However, there are many other numbers I’ve seen for the distance. Bottom line – it is long!
  • Portions of the A.T. are enjoyed by 4 million people per year
  • The A.T. is within a day’s drive of 66% of the U.S. population

Hiking Lady’s Recommended Books & Movies about the Appalachian Trail

Have you hiked parts of the A.T.? Are any Hiking Lady readers thru-hikers of the A.T.? Please share your stories and comments below!
Happy Trails!

Why Drink Tap Water In Stainless Steel Bottles

GreenBottle.info has opened up their Stainless Steel Bottle Shop and Green Blog to increase awareness of the impact that bottled water costs not only to the environment but to health as well.

Yip Bop, creator of Green Bottle, recently stated, “The majority of the people that drink bottled water are not aware of the impact plastic bottles have on the environment nor to their health. We are promoting stainless steel bottles for water to not only reduce health risks which plastic bottles bring, but also to reduce global warming as well.”

Bottled water is popular because people think it tastes better and is safer as opposed to tap water. People also think that they are helping the environment by recycling the plastic bottle when they are finished with it. Yip says, “40% of bottled water is actually filtered tap water. Just buy a filter and cut out the middleman.” And “1 out of 5 bottles are actually recycled. The rest contribute to 5 billion pounds of waste from plastic water bottles.”

Stainless steel bottles are regarded as “Green Bottles” for the following facts:

  • Stainless steel bottles are reusable.
  • Stainless steel bottles are light.
  • Stainless steel water bottles are made with 18/8 food-grade stainless steel (stainless steel 304).
  • Stainless steel bottles are toxic-free and BPA-free and will not corrode.
  • Stainless steel bottles are easy to clean and always look great.
  • You can drink hot or cold beverages in a stainless steel bottle.
  • Stainless steel bottles are convenient because you can fill them from public sources.

Green Bottle carries a wide selection of Stainless Steel Bottles for everyone to use while working out in the gym, shopping, feeding the baby, camping and hiking, travel, work and of course lounging. They come in a myriad of shapes and colors and they all make an eco-friendly statement which gives them the name, Green Bottle.

Green Bottle’s prices are very low in comparison to their competition because they deal directly with their Green Chinese manufacturer and the manufacturing process includes 3 quality checks before it ships. Says Yip, “We all use the same manufactures in China; we have different designs for our stainless steel bottles, but all in all, our bottles not only beat competition with our quality but with our prices as well.”
